The most difficult question that every newbie bangs his head on is – what is a blog? One can be easily left baffled looking at the volume of blogs that are rising in the nooks and corner of the web.
So many Blogs, what are they? Why do they exist?
Every blog is different from the others just like us people, in terms of appearance, voice, etc. and hence many find it very difficult to understand. This guide is a primer written exclusively for beginners like you, which will clarify what a blog is all about. So let’s get started shall we?
What is a Blog – The Web Definitions
Definitions are essential for understanding any concept and a blog is no exception. Just like people use hello world program as a stepping stone for learning any programming language…
Oh my gosh, the very moment I start using the term “definition” things tend to get a little complex. Yes we all know that definitions are complex and are considered vital, despite the fact that many people couldn’t understand it 😉
Don’t worry, once we see the common definitions of a blog that are splattered all over the internet, we will also try to dwell a little deeper to make sure no stones are unturned.
I know that you don’t have all the time in the world, so I will just take the definitions from the top two websites and spice it up a little 🙂
As per Google, a blog is:
A regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group, that is written in an informal or conversational style.
As per Wikipedia,
A blog is a discussion or informational site published on the World Wide Web and consisting of discrete entries (“posts”) typically displayed in reverse chronological order (the most recent post appears first).
So why did I bring this up? Weblog is the term that has been used in the past, which has now being referred to as a blog. We can also say that it is a truncation of the expression weblog (Wikipedia says so).
If you ask me personally the term weblog doesn’t make much sense since a blog isn’t a web log. Or was it really pronounced as we blog? See there is always confusion when we end up using words like this.
Nevertheless, as I promised i will try to elucidate what is a blog for you.
Let me just break down the above definitions into smaller chunks to make things more clear,
Let us start by dissecting the definition of a blog by Google,
A regularly updated website or web page – A blog is something that will be regularly updated or expected to be updated by a blogger (a person who writes in a blog) which will be helpful for readers.
Typically one run by an individual or small group – Usually a blog is a one man show but it could also be updated by a group of friends who have similar interests over a subject. For example, every day during your break time if you and your friends happen to discuss about Voodoo, you could very well start a blog about voodoo. Just make sure you are aware of all the spells 😉
That is written in an informal or conversational style. – The most important aspect of a blog is the voice. Just like different singers have different singing style, a blogger will also have his/her own voice which is commonly referred to as the writing style.
Now let’s dissect the blog definition by Wikipedia into pieces,
A blog is a discussion or informational site published on the World Wide Web – A blog often happens to be a place where a lot of fruitful discussions take place. Sometimes these discussions will be more valuable than the blog post itself, quite ironical isn’t it? All these discussions in blogging terminology are collectively referred to as comments.
consisting of discrete entries (“posts”) typically displayed in reverse chronological order – A blogger can update his blog monthly, bi-weekly, daily, or even on hourly basis. When he does this the blog posts are stored and displayed in the reverse chronological order, it’s because the recent information is what matters the most to the reader.
What is a blog? – My Definition
The definition of a blog differs from person to person. If you ask me, I would simply define blog as a place where you share what you have learnt and also learn from others (remember the fruitful discussions?)
I see blog as way to spread the knowledge that I have learnt so far and that’s what pushed me into the blogosphere.
Blogging Fever – when it all started?
Well it looks like the word blog has been used in books back in 1800 and started to smoke during the early 90’s, which is a blazing fire today. The below snapshot from Google n gram chart is the proof for that,
During earlier day’s people used blogs as an online journal where they scribble about their day to day events, rants and some even used it as a medium to blow their own trumpet. But how many really care about what you write if it’s just going be about, You, You and You? This type of blog wouldn’t fly unless you are a famous personality. I often wonder why Robert Downey Jr doesn’t start a blog.
Today’s blogs have outgrown into something unimaginable, they are the most powerful mediums of the web world. Many people use blogs as a channel to market their products which often results in better revenue and sales.
How are Blogs Created?
Whenever people utter the word blog, the first thing that comes into everybody’s mind is WordPress. It is the widely used platform that quickly helps a totally non-technical person to just focus on writing content.
Hey, did I mention that a blog can be created without much hassle?
WordPress is not the only way to create blogs (but it is the highly recommended one though). Joomla and Drupal are the other two widely mentioned recommendations, there could be a lot more – how long has it been since you did some homework?
A Quick Summary
- A blog is a place, where you write what you are passionate about in plain simple words, which are commonly referred to as a blog post.
- People will read your blog post and if they like your content, they will share it with their friends and families which may get spread across the globe.
- If your readers have something to say, either opposing or approving they will leave it in your comments.
A Blogger doesn’t have to follow any predefined rules if he is planning to start a blog, if you feel blogging isn’t happening the way you expect it, start a blog and be change you wish to see.
